Au pairs in Canada could be affected by immigration changes

29/07/2010

news image Au pairs in Canada may see a change in the country's immigration law that could see temporary workers being allowed to settle permanently.

Alberta's employment and immigration minister, Thomas Lukaszuk, believes that the country's temporary foreign worker programme is no longer working for the province and needs to be reassessed.

He stated that it has provided a large number of workers to deal with the labour shortages experienced in the area but it is only a short-term solution, reports the Canadian Visa Bureau.

Currently, skilled workers from overseas are allowed to enter Canada for a maximum of two years and nearly 66,000 people took advantage of this in 2009.

Mr Lukaszuk said that many of these foreign workers would like to settle in Canada permanently and that this should be considered to avoid a constant turnover in the labour force.

People can become an au pair in Canada by obtaining a live-in care giver visa, which allows them to stay in the country for one year and can be renewed for another year if a host family is offering them more employment.
