Being an au pair in Denmark
- Age: The au pair must be between 17 and 29 years of age .
- Salary (Pocket money): Au pair must receive at least €335 per month in pocket money from the host family.
- Number of hrs to work and days off: An au pair must perform 3 – 5 hours' worth of household chores daily (i.e. 18 – 30 hours per week) and receive at least one day off per week.
- Visas: Au pairs from Nordic countries can travel to and work in Denmark freely. Au pairs from EU countries (excluding the eight new eastern European members) should apply for a residence certificate whilst au pairs from the eight new eastern European members of the EU (the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) must apply for an au pair residence permit. - Duration of stay: An au pair is given a residence permit for one year and a six-month extension can be applied for.
- Language requirements: An au pair should be able to speak and understand a reasonable level of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German.
- Health Insurance: An au pair is not required to take out insurance to work in Denmark but it is advised that they have both health and travel insurance
- Travel costs: Travel costs to Denmark from the au pairs home country should be covered by the au pair. However, if the host family wants to pay for a part of the costs, it is suggested that they do so after the au pair has stayed with them for at least half of the agreed time.
- Language courses: There are no requirements for an au pair to attend language courses in Denmark
