Being an au pair in Ireland

• Age: We have not found any restrictions on the age of au pairs working in Ireland but it would be better to stay within the guidelines of 18 – 30.
• Salary (Pocket money): €50-€75 per week for 30 hrs of work a week
• Visas: Au pairs from the EEA*, can be welcomed as an au pair into Ireland without a visa whilst au pairs from other countries can go to Ireland to work by obtaining a student visa. In order to get a student visa, they need to be registered to study English at an approved language school. See Visa requirements for Ireland for more information
• Language requirements: There are no language requirements for Ireland but it is suggested that an au pair has a good understanding of English, the national language of Ireland in order to live independently. For example, to make it easy to contact emergency services or read medicine labels if necessary.
• Health Insurance: It is not a requirement to have insurance to work in Ireland but it is advised that an au pair has both health and travel insurance
• Travel costs: Travel costs to Ireland from the au pairs home country should be covered by the au pair. However, if the host family wants to pay for a part of the costs, it is suggested that they do so after the au pair has stayed with them for at least half of the agreed time.

*The EEA is defined as the European Economic Area which is made up of the EU countries, plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
